What is the difference between a Real Self Defence Martial Art like Defence Lab or other Traditional/Sport Based Martial Arts?
It’s very simple, if 3 guys break into your house at 3:00am in the morning and your answer to the situation is to try to fight them with Boxing, Kickboxing, Grappling or anything with just your bare hands then you are definitely “NOT” studying a Realistic Self Defence Martial Art. What you are studying is most likely a Sport Based Martial Art or a Traditional Martial Art which will probably get you killed if used under these realistic circumstances !!
REAL SELF DEFENSE starts with weapons and works it way down the ladder to bare handed techniques.
Open the newspaper any day of the week and you will read about someone who was shot to death, stabbed to death, or assaulted with some type of weapon. In comparison “very rarely” will you ever hear of someone who was beaten to death by one person with their bare hands. In the REAL world, violence happens against multiple opponents and opponents with weapons. Not in a ring, but on the street, in your car, or in your home. If your Martial Arts training is not addressing this it is ”NOT” preparing you for REAL VIOLENCE or teaching you REAL SELF DEFENCE.
To survive “anything goes” street violence you need a Martial Art that is designed for it and specializes in it and that is what we do at Defence Lab. Our mission statement is: “We study violence to escape it, prevent it and if all else fails, utilize it ourselves to survive”.
By no means are we knocking Sport Systems or Mixed Martial Arts, they are great in what they specialize in which is a “SPORT ENVIRONMENT with REFEREE’S, RULES, ONE OPPONENT and NO WEAPONS”. Under these circumstances these Arts are all excellent. But when it comes to 1- Multiple Opponents 2-Weapons 3- Realistic Environments 4- Anything Goes Violence, they fall apart because their training is not focused on it, nor is it tactically designed for it.
If you are currently studying a Martial Art to compete in tornaments, for a culture experience, to get in shape or just for fun then that is great. As long as you understand what you are studying and the reasons for studying it. But if you are studying a Martial Art for “what you think is Self Defence” then be very carefull, as you could be setting yourself up for disaster with the result being the hospital or the graveyard.
If your not really sure what kind of Martial Art your studying and you want to determine if its teaching you real self defence, then ask yourself three simple questions:
1- Does my Martial Art train me to deal with and address multiple opponents from Day One?
2- Does my Martial Art train me to “use and defend against” modern day weapons that I would find on the street?
3- Does my Martial Art train me in various environments and in self defence situations that I would find myself on the street?
If your Martial Art is not addressing the above then you are NOT studying a Martial Art designed for Real Self Defence or Real World Violence.
Real Self Defence is not a sport or a game. It’s your life and/or your loved one’s lives. The loser gets seriously hurt, raped or killed. They don’t lose a trophy or a tournament.
So please, whether you decide to study with us or not, know the difference and seek out the proper instruction.
